How LEC Was Created and Why Millions of Fans Love It

From its inception in 2013 to the present day, it has built a status as a cult esports competition where legends are born. LEC: History, Fun Facts, and Moments That Wrote History LEC (League of Legends EMEA Championship) is the highest competitive league in the game League of Legends for the Europe, Middle East, and Africa region. Its story began in 2013, when it was known as the EU LCS and operated under a joint brand with the American LCS. Each year, two splits were held – spring and summer – a tradition the league maintains to this day. The turning point came in 2019 when the European branch became independent and was renamed LEC. In addition to the new name, it brought a fresh visual identity, a stronger emphasis on entertainment, community interaction, and building the brands of teams and players. The response was immediate – LEC secured a firm place among the top esports leagues in the world. Throughout its history, LEC has had two mainstays, Fnatic and G2 Esports, which have dominated most of the splits. All other teams combined have won only a few titles – the most notable among them being Alliance (2014) and later MAD Lions, who won both splits in 2021 and became the first team after Fnatic and G2 to achieve such a milestone.

With the advent of franchising and later a new format with Winter–Spring–Summer splits, the league opened up to new faces. Teams like Rogue, Team BDS, Vitality, SK Gaming, and Karmine Corp have shown that there are no longer just two favorites in the LEC. Every split brings new stories, new surprises, and above all – increasingly balanced competition.

- Czech and Slovak players are also among the top – Marek "Humanoid" Brázda, Patrik "Patrik" Jírka, and Daniel "Carzzy" Zinkevich have achieved multiple playoff successes with teams like Fnatic and G2. Slovak player Matúš "Neon" Jakubčík played in the LEC for Schalke 04, Misfits, and Vitality, and is the only Slovak to have competed in international S-tier tournaments.

LEC has its own official songs and music videos that open the season or highlight the final events – among the most famous are, for example, Wildfire or Reckless with my heart.

Hosts and commentators like Sjokz, Quickshot, Drakos, Vedius, and Caedrel are an integral part of the LEC experience – in addition to analysis and

LEC XPO – a separate fan zone with activities, cosplay, and booths – takes place outside the arena and is open to visitors without a ticket.
